    How to keep drivers engaged while supervising driving automation? A literature survey and categorization of six solution areas

    This work aimed to organise recommendations for keeping people engaged during human supervision of driving automation, encouraging a safe and acceptable introduction of automated driving systems. First, heuristic knowledge of human factors, ergonomics, and psychological theory was used to propose solution areas to human supervisory control problems of sustained attention. Driving and non-driving research examples were drawn to substantiate the solution areas. Automotive manufacturers might (1) avoid this supervisory role altogether, (2) reduce it in objective ways or (3) alter its subjective experiences, (4) utilize conditioning learning principles such as with gamification and/or selection/training techniques, (5) support internal driver cognitive processes and mental models and/or (6) leverage externally situated information regarding relations between the driver, the driving task, and the driving environment. Second, a cross-domain literature survey of influential human-automation interaction research was conducted for how to keep engagement/attention in supervisory control. The solution areas (via numeric theme codes) were found to be reliably applied from independent rater categorisations of research recommendations. Areas (5) and (6) were addressed by around 70% or more of the studies, areas (2) and (4) in around 50% of the studies, and areas (3) and (1) in less than around 20% and 5%, respectively.     Cannabinoid Type 1 Receptors Are Upregulated During Acute Activation of Brown Adipose Tissue

    Activating brown adipose tissue (BAT) could provide a potential approach for the treatment of obesity and metabolic disease in humans. Obesity is associated with upregulation of the endocannabinoid system, and blocking the cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R) has been shown to cause weight loss and to decrease cardiometabolic risk factors. These effects may be mediated partly via increased BAT metabolism, since there is evidence that CB1R antagonism activates BAT in rodents. To investigate the significance of CB1R in BAT function, we quantified the density of CB1R in human and rodent BAT using the positron emission tomography radioligand [F-18]FMPEP-d(2) and measured BAT activation in parallel with the glucose analog [F-18]fluorodeoxyglucose. Activation by cold exposure markedly increased CB1R density and glucose uptake in the BAT of lean men. Similarly, 3-receptor agonism increased CB1R density in the BAT of rats. In contrast, overweight men with reduced BAT activity exhibited decreased CB1R in BAT, reflecting impaired endocannabinoid regulation. Image-guided biopsies confirmed CB1R mRNA expression in human BAT. Furthermore, CB1R blockade increased glucose uptake and lipolysis of brown adipocytes. Our results highlight that CB1Rs are significant for human BAT activity, and the CB1Rs provide a novel therapeutic target for BAT activation in humans

    Control transitions in highly automated driving

    The focus of this thesis is to assess how drivers interact with automated driving systems, more specifically: how control transitions from automated driving to manual driving and vice versa are executed and can be improved upon. In doing so, it identifies the key elements in research into control transitions in automated driving and addresses them. Whilst automated driving shows great promise in reducing road accident rates and congestion it is no panacea in driving safety at its current level (SAE Level 2 and Level 3). Until full autonomy (SAE Level 4) can be realised drivers will still have to be prepared to resume control when the automated driving system can no longer handle a situation. Research has shown that when drivers are exposed to automation, their reaction time slows, and the sudden change of task creates a sudden spike in workload. Such events could lead to incidents. To investigate this problem, the thesis utilise a multi-method using driving simulators as well as on road trials. Ultimately, the thesis aims to provide insights into how drivers handle the transition of control and whether this transition can be assisted by different levels of information support. Recommendations regarding the design of control transitions in highly automated driving are valuable for policy makers and vehicle manufacturers alike when designing and deploying automated vehicles of the future

    High degree of consensus amongst an expert panel regarding focal resurfacing of chondral and osteochondral lesions of the femur with mini-implants

    Introduction: The rationale for the use of mini-implants for partial resurfacing in the treatment of femoral chondral and osteochondral lesions is still under debate. The evidence supporting best practise guidelines is based on studies with low-level evidence. A consensus group of experts was convened to collaboratively advance towards consensus opinions regarding the best available evidence. The purpose of this article is to report the resulting consensus statements. Methods: Twenty-five experts participated in a process based on the Delphi method of achieving consensus. Questions and statements were drafted via an online survey of two rounds, for initial agreement and comments on the proposed statements. An in-person meeting between the panellists was organised during the 2022 ESSKA congress to further discuss and debate each of the statements. A final agreement was made via a final online survey a few days later. The strength of consensus was characterised as: consensus, 51–74% agreement; strong consensus, 75–99% agreement; unanimous, 100% agreement. Results: Statements were developed in the fields of patient assessment and indications, surgical considerations and postoperative care. Between the 25 statements that were discussed by this working group, 18 achieved unanimous, whilst 7 strong consensus. Conclusion: The consensus statements, derived from experts in the field, represent guidelines to assist clinicians in decision-making for the appropriate use of mini-implants for partial resurfacing in the treatment of femoral chondral and osteochondral lesions.     Professionals within the judicial system sometimes believe they can assess whether someone is lying or not based on cues such as body language and emotional expression. Research has, however, shown that this is impossible. The Finnish Supreme Court has also given rulings in accordance with this demonstrated fact. There has also been previous research on whether party or witness statements are assessed differently in court depending on whether they are given live, via videoconference, or via prerecorded video. In the present study, we investigated how a Finnish sample of district judges (N=47) assigned probative value to different variables concerning the statement or the statement giver, such as body language and emotional expression. We also investigated the connection between the judges’ beliefs about the relevance of body language and emotional expression and their preference for live statements or statements via videoconference. The judges reported assigning equal amounts of probative value to statements given live and statements given via videoconference. However, judges found it easier to detect deception live, and this preference correlated with how relevant they thought body language is when assessing the probative value of the statement. In other words, a slight bias to assess live statements more favorably than statements given via videoconference might still exist. More effort needs to be put into making judges and Supreme Courts aware of robust scientific results that have been the subject of decades of research, such as the fact that one cannot assess whether someone is lying or not based on cues such as body language

    Search for Higgs and ZZ Boson Decays to J/ψγJ/\psi\gamma and Υ(nS)γ\Upsilon(nS)\gamma with the ATLAS Detector

    A search for the decays of the Higgs and ZZ bosons to J/ψγJ/\psi\gamma and Υ(nS)γ\Upsilon(nS)\gamma (n=1,2,3n=1,2,3) is performed with pppp collision data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 20.3fb120.3\mathrm{fb}^{-1} collected at s=8TeV\sqrt{s}=8\mathrm{TeV} with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of events is observed above expected backgrounds and 95% CL upper limits are placed on the branching fractions. In the J/ψγJ/\psi\gamma final state the limits are 1.5×1031.5\times10^{-3} and 2.6×1062.6\times10^{-6} for the Higgs and ZZ bosons, respectively, while in the Υ(1S,2S,3S)γ\Upsilon(1S,2S,3S)\,\gamma final states the limits are (1.3,1.9,1.3)×103(1.3,1.9,1.3)\times10^{-3} and (3.4,6.5,5.4)×106(3.4,6.5,5.4)\times10^{-6}, respectively

    Search for Scalar-Charm pair production in pp collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    The results of a dedicated search for pair production of scalar partners of charm quarks are reported. The search is based on an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb1^{-1} of pp collisions at s=8\sqrt{s}=8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search is performed using events with large missing transverse momentum and at least two jets, where the two leading jets are each tagged as originating from c-quarks. Events containing isolated electrons or muons are vetoed. In an R-parity-conserving minimal supersymmetric scenario in which a single scalar-charm state is kinematically accessible, and where it decays exclusively into a charm quark and a neutralino, 95% confidence-level upper limits are obtained in the scalar-charm-neutralino mass plane such that, for neutralino masses below 200 GeV, scalar-charm masses up to 490 GeV are excluded
